As you found out i think,its not a bag edit problem.
Heres how to do it in blender,not sure about 3dsm

Setting the origin in Blender was easy, thanks.

I thought I might just go back & forth between blender and 3dsm but for some reason exporting from blender and importing to 3dsm caused some weird results, either I got an "improper file format" error or what was imported was completely messed up.

I guess I will just do whatever geometry editing I want to in 3dsmax and just use blender last to get the materials and the origin stuff figured out.
