For RWD cars you should make the front totally open. I guess you need to have a differential on both axles because that's how the game/engine works?

Two cars have it right in one transmission: American 2 banger and American 5 the limited has open front. So you've noticed that with the two latest cars.

American 1 locked transmission is still 4WD. 90% rear, 10% front.
American 5 open transmission is 4WD 90% rear, 10% front
I guess this can have some small effect in handling.

Oh this actually doesn't matter. Power Distribution FR defines if the car is RWD, FWD or 4WD and as long as it isn't 4WD the other axle is automatically open one.

AM1 locked is still AWD and AM5 open is also AWD.
