Title: Steam EA - Grip (Rollcage spiritual sequel)
Post by: KazzyMac on August 16, 2015, 05:03:31 PM
Update Unfortunately the Kickstarter was cancelled, but they're still going ahead with Earl Ass instead. Woo.

http://www.cagedelement.com/grip/ (http://www.cagedelement.com/grip/)

I wonder, does anybody even remember Rollcage here? Or played it? If not, go play it, it's a brilliant old (1998-ish) arcade racing game where you basically drive indestructible invertible tanks.  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eTkZiWQ4uM) Sits alongside Wipeout as one of the 'must-plays' of the Playstation era, I swear.

So if you guys heard about Formula Fusion (Wipeout spiritual sequel) then some of the original devs of Rollcage are making a spiritual sequel to it. It needs to happen. So give it a look and if you like what you see then back it!

Original Kickstarter, now cancelled: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/169002413/grip-an-intense-futuristic-combat-racer/description (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/169002413/grip-an-intense-futuristic-combat-racer/description)

Never have played Rollcages, but I have same developer's later game, Firebugs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5njX8ITl-U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5njX8ITl-U)

In a market that's full of overhyped street racing games and mundane racing sims, I think this should happen. Haven't played the original Rollcage games before, but after seeing the trailers I was sold on this.
(here's to hoping Re-Volt gets a spiritual remake as well...)

Never heard of any of the titles mentioned, but the trailers and screenshots for Grip have me interested.
I'm not sure I can back it on that alone, though. We'll see.

(here's to hoping Re-Volt gets a spiritual remake as well...)
For the longest time, Re-Volt was the only racing game I felt worth having installed on my system (and it still is ...installed on my system. Reading this back I can see how it could be misunderstood. But no, I certainly have at least one other racing game installed :) ).

A comment from one the Devs, he one the 2 Devs on the team that work on Rollcage:

Creator Caged Element 4 days ago

@voltagex, I think there are some valuable lessons to be learned from that project. It's a real shame. I can't comment on the internal problems they had, but unfortunately they appear to have underestimated the cost of development.

In our case, our funding goal accurately reflects our scope. We have oodles of passion for this game, but passion alone will not make it.
I personally had the pleasure of working with some extraordinarily talented people to bring you Rollcage, Rollcage Stage II and Firebugs. I helped to design and make all three: designing and building tracks, project managed and produced. I have a deep understanding of how THIS actual game is made at a task by task level.

Which is why we have spent considerable time working on a meticulous schedule and risk analysis. We have thought of everything we can - and scheduled contingency for the things we can't think of. The only concession we have made is to pay ourselves minimum wage - and that's where our passion comes in.

Chris and Rob and the rest of the team are also extraordinarily talented people. It will be an honour to continue working with them if we're given the opportunity to bring you this awesome game. Please help share the news if you are able.

I ask a GRIP Dev a couple of questions and got a response. :)

Hi, I would like to know if there will be wheel support or will this be a pad only game?

About online multiplayer, will there be text chat at least in the lobby ( in race would be good too ) so online community can get to know each other and do some BSing while waiting in the lobby?

Thanks

Purple44, who has enjoyed playing Rollcage back in the day.

Hey Purple

Yes, the game will have wheel support

And yes, there will definitely be some kind of chat for players to communicate!

-Chris

*************************

Had to send this back in a reply:

When you say "some kind of chat", do you mean it could be VOIP instead of text chat? VOIP has issues on the PC and text chat easier for all to used. Text chat working well online with Wreckfest. You would do well to copy what Bugbear has done with text chat and online overall.

I got Chris to carify if there will be text chat in GRIP online:

Hey Purple

I love Wreckfest! I backed the failed Kickstarter and was so happy to see it become successful regardless. Thanks for posting there

When I say chat I mean text chat. It's essential to any game, really ;)

Woah Rollcage: amazing futuristic racing game. I had only a demo version with always the same track with 2 players to choose but it was really cool.
Happy to see it's isn't forgotten  :)

I loved the Rollcage games, especially Stage II with the Scramble game mode! I've been thinking for years that there'd need to be a new version and just earlier this week a friend of mine linked me to that kickstarter page. No need to even think about backing or not! I really hope they get the money they ask for.

Kickstarter cancelled but it will be going into Steam Early Access no later than Nov 30. Here is the email I got.

GRIP Kickstarter cancelled – prepare to race on early access

Posted by Caged Element

Hey loyal GRIP backers.
We apologize for the lack of updates on our Kickstarter page; it's hard to post updates to a campaign, knowing it's unlikely to succeed.

Yes, we realized a while ago (as did many of you) that things were not looking positive for reaching our funding goal. That said, we continued to push. We released a new action-packed trailer. We did interviews. We tweeted, emailed and posted everywhere we could. Sadly, we just did not receive the exposure we needed to maintain the momentum after you all gave the campaign such a fantastic start.

Are we disappointed in the performance of the Kickstarter? Sure.

Is an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign going to stop us from making this game for you?

The good news is, we have a great plan for moving forward, and we're very excited with the direction we're about to take. We're hoping you'll continue to support us in our journey together.

 Here's the scoop:
People have been talking about a playable demo or a playable version of GRIP for a while now - ever since we released the first trailer in July. It’s obvious people really want to get their hands on GRIP.
Well, we're going to give you that chance very soon, thanks to Steam early access.
Early access will allow us to truly focus on development, while giving the players the power to change the shape of the game as it's being made.

Community feedback will be essential in GRIP's continued development, and we like it that way. This is how we envisioned this project to play out from its inception, which is why we're so excited about this new plan.
Now, here's where your valued and continued support comes in...

We've launched a Paypal/Stripe campaign on our website

This campaign has been established in order for you to buy an early access code in advance, as well as receive some bonus goodies for being such great supporters. Funding from this campaign will go directly to developing and bug fixing the current build of GRIP into something more playable and therefore more fun.

This new build will launch on Steam no later than November 30th 2015. We don't need a lot of money to get to that milestone; we just need to pay some outstanding bills in the meantime, which is why we're asking for your support in advance of Steam early access. Your continued support will solidify the backbone of GRIP's development moving forward, and we will greatly appreciate it.

So there you have it, our new direction for GRIP.

You can read more about the new Paypal/Stripe campaign on our website, including features coming with the first playable build, as well as an initial priority list for further development of releases on Steam.

Lastly, we want to thank everyone who backed us on Kickstarter, and for their enthusiasm towards this game's success as well as their undying support throughout the campaign.

Of course, what update wouldn't be complete without GIFs and some shout-outs?  We've got a whole page full of GIFs for you to look at, some new and some old.  Just a warning: it's quite heavy on bandwidth

Thanks for the info Chris. GRIP been Greenlit.  :)

You can pre-order here from Cage Element site, like we did with Next Car Game:

http://www.cagedelement.com/grip/

For me this workout better for me than if I had pledge for Kickstarter. At Kickstarter page I would only get to be beta tester at the level I was willing to pledge for.

Now I can pre-order for $20 today and get to play alpha version when it ready.  :)

I saw this one coming. At least it wasn't left behind like what happened to Street Tuning Evolution...

Moral of the story: Never, ever, use Kickstarter.

I admittedly saw it coming as well but considering that Rollcage is one of my childhood gems I made myself be optimistic in the hopes that it would catch on and fly. I knew in the back of my mind that even if the Kickstarter failed the game would still be made.

Though it probably won't be as good, they'll probably have to shelve some of the music talent they signed up (I think a lot of their budget was towards the music).

Updating OP/thread and whatnot.

Hmm, pre-order site say this - $26.50 CAD (approx. $20 USD)

But wants to charge my Paypal $26. That not $20.

Anybody else getting over charged?

Emailed Chris this week with some westions. He got back to me today.

Will the authorities intervene in races??
1) In terms of expanded story features, we'd like to have some kind of military intervention that can randomly occur during a percentage of the races.  How often and how much of a presence they'd have would need to be tested extensively, but we think it would add a really cool extra element to the gameplay, having to fight off the "space cops" as you battle to finish the race in first.

There would no doubt be an option in the settings to turn this feature on or off, since racing purists may not like it.

Having this feature is not guaranteed though, since it's an additional feature outside the base game, and would need extra funding to see it developed properly.

Will this game feature set pieces that change the layout of the track like in Split/Second or will there just be debris you have to avoid when blowing up the environment?
2) Although the bridge explosion in the trailer only leads to rubble that needs to be dodged, we've got quite a few ideas for having alternate routes being created due to destruction.

Will YouTubers have to worry about copyright strikes when posting gameplay when there is background music playing?
3) This is something we'd need to speak to the artists about, but just to be safe, if you're going to record early access gameplay once the game is available, just mute the music unless we've released information about copyright.

Check the denomination on the amount. It should say $26 CAD; mine did, when I bought the $53 tier earlier, said $53 CAD on the price thing, which turned out to be about £27.

The first Build for GRIP got release Nov 30. I had forgotten I pre-ordered this game and just got new Build downloaded yesterday. No wheel support or remapping yet, so had to use the KB with the stock key assignments.

Here a video showing menus and the 2 available tracks:

GRIP will get release on Steam as an early access game sometime next year.

If you're tempted, pick it up. It's a really fun little game even if there's not much content yet.

Bear in mind though that currently the HUD doesn't scale correctly on non-16:9 displays and the only supported controllers are Xbox 360/Xbox One pads (you need x360ce to map other controllers for the moment). Support's gonna be added/fixed eventually, but right now supported input devices are barebones (as you'd expect from a very early build).

Oh, I have several clips in the EA release trailer too. ;)

And there will be wheel support some day or I would of had to pass on getting GRIP.

[NOT SOON] Driving wheel support? When?? (http://forum.cagedelement.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=319&p=5249#p5249)

Quote from: Chris_CE
Wheel support is planned.

Remapping keyboard is apparently not as easy as it sounds.  For some reason UE4 is making it hard, but it's planned.  Just not top priority right now as there are more pressing issues

But there always a chance the Devs could pull a a Stainless and renege on doing wheel support like what happen with Carmageddon: Reincarnation. Chris seem be a straightforward guy and I'm willing take a chance on these Devs.

Should be no problem considering my internet is so slow... so single player mode is no prob for me. also, my momo pc wheel gear is in Livermore, California so that's a no go... I am staying old school (keyboard) for a bit. works perfectly with Wreckfest, which I am really glad ofcourse.  have a cool weekend Purple!

Working graveyard tonight, so off to take my 2 hour nap and then get 2 hours of online with Wreckfest before heading off to work.

I have not play much yet. Waiting for wheel support. I mainly bought in early to help make sure GRIP get develop. I remember playing Rollcage and love that the car can land on it top and keeps going!  :D

I can wait for final version, but I will checkout online and see how well the Caged Element Devs did with my Multiplayer Do's and Don'ts (http://community.bugbeargames.com/index.php/topic,655.0.html) thread.

If you are planning on doing online multiplayer, I suggest the Devs give my Multiplayer Do's and Don'ts (http://community.bugbeargames.com/index.php/topic,655.0.html) thread over at Bugbear forum a read. Just one wrong decision can kill off online racing 2 months after release day. :(

You get online right, online multiplayer can thrive for years and help sell a few more copies of a racing game. Like it did for Flatout 2 and GRID 1.  :)

You can map the steering buttons to your steering wheel? And gas and brake pedal work separately?

Yep, you just use x360ce to set up bits of wheel and pedals to emulate the buttons that are set to 360 pad.

Available at
http://www.x360ce.com/default.aspx (http://www.x360ce.com/default.aspx)

grab the 64 bit version, unpack it to game folder in steam-

steam-steamapps-common-grip,

then when folder is open it goes in -

grip-binaries-win64

it will ask to add 2 files when you open x360ce from there , hit yes, then for me the gas/brake were on correct buttons and steering is on the left thumb trigger, you can adjust sensitivity of wheel and add other buttons as needed.

Good luck, post back if you need more help ;)

Thanks Cornkid.  :D :D

I got around to downloading the x360ce_x64 version today. Ran x360ce_x64.exe from the E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grip\Grip\Binaries\Win64  folder. Let program do it create thing, to get the xinput1_3.dll file and it made a x360ce.ini file.

I stayed with the stock x360ce.ini that was made, started GRIP and it work. :)

I did not like the button assignments for handbrake and look back. So I change the button assignments to the buttons I use in Wreckfest, in x360ce and save a new x360ce.ini file. Now I'm happy camper. :)

Had to change some the sensitivity controller settings to get the wheel to turn fast enough. Not to bad now. And I found out you don't need the x360ce_x64.exe program running after you happy with the x360ce.ini file. You just start GRIP and my wheel still working.  :o

Again thanks Cornkid for the help.  :D  :D

I loved Rollcage and would definitely pick this up if released on PS4. Is this a PC only release now given its current state?

There was mention of plans for PS4 during the Kickstarter:  PS4 version? (https://www.cagedelement.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=158&p=2223&hilit=consoles#p2223)

Wheel support is coming either upon launch or soon after

Good to hear Chris! :)

Been waiting try GRIP out with real wheel support, instead using a 3rd party program. And good to know you keeping promise that there would be wheel support at some point, when I ask way back when early access got started and I wanted to know before I put my money down.

How is the racing?
Is it more like 'Combat' than racing?
Or can you JUST race, and not need any combat?

Compare to:
Flatout 2
Gas Guzzlers.

Which is it closer to?

And, is it arcady, like NOS and eveything, or is it stiff racing like Wreckfest?

Thanks.

Jul 6 @ 2:39pm   I hear GRIP getting closer to final release this fall. I be curious Chris how well you guys did with my Multiplayer Do's and Don'ts for online racing games? You remember me giving you the link?

Bugbear has gone final version with Wreckfest and I gave my final verdict on how well Bugbear did with Wreckfest online here in my thread I started back in June 2013:

Multiplayer Do's and Don'ts. (http://community.bugbeargames.com/index.php/topic,655.0.html)

I hope the GRIP Devs will follow in Bugbear footsteps and also do a good job with GRIP online. :)

Hi Chris, I hope there will at least be text chat in the lobby so community can get know each other a bit and do some BSing between races. :)

I hope @everyone will be going to their local store on Tuesday to make sure they've put the boxes out the right way up! https://twitter.com/WiredP/status/1058359747940888582

Racers! Let’s flip retail upside down! Head into your local retailer on launch and flip @GRIPvideogame upside down! Share a picture using #GRIPupsidedown for a free in-game DLC reward! Best pic will also #WIN either an Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch or a PS4 PRO (Your choice!) 🏁

Reading this thread tonight, Add wheel support (https://steamcommunity.com/app/396900/discussions/0/282992646973163304/?ctp=2), wheel support did not make it into final release version of GRIP.  :(
