Title: POLL: Gamepad, keyboard or a wheel?
Post by: Janne Suur-Näkki on September 02, 2013, 10:50:28 PM
Since the title is developed PC first, it's time to carry out a little poll to give us some idea on what input device everyone prefers on the system. So, a quick question: do you think you will be playing with a gamepad, a keyboard or a wheel? Thanks for your input!

A little XBox 360 Controller for me. :)

On a related note, it's always a good thing to be able to bind keys/buttons the way we like. FO-UC lacked this, hoping it'll make it in on NCG.  :-[

Same X360. But I would like to see such good keyboard support as FlatOut 1/2 had. Just in case.

I hope in the NCG be possible assign each action (eg - brake) on two various buttons (eg "S" on the keyboard, and "RT" on the controller)

Most likely I'll be playing with my wheel (Logitech G27), but I do have a Xbox 360 gamepad just in case.

When it comes to wheels, I dont expect this game to have the best force feedback in the world, but some decent response with no deadzones and a reasonable steering lock will suffice to make me happy.

This. I very much like to play with a wheel (Fanatec CSR) if possible. But keyboard support is of course a good thing also. At least in FO1 it's almost impossible to drive with a wheel because of huge deadzone and slow response.
/Ohand I don't have a controller for PC so it's either keyboard or wheel.

X360 for me probably. I only use my wheel for sim racing where it is needed, in other scenarios gamepads are just more comfortable to use for me.

Chating to people playing UC on line i found that most people use a XBOX360 gamepad.

I use the G27 Logitech. FlatOut 1 had the best FFB of the other games to me.

Primarily keyboard, this needs to get much better wheel controls than in FlatOuts before I'm in with the wheel (G25). I've tried every FlatOuts for PC with it, but the mentioned terrible deadzone and response came against, plus for some reason the force feedback jammed on for the whole run after first turn.

If this game is going to feature the deforming terrain, then the wheel with proper controls would be almost only option for me. :)

Most definitely a wheel + pedals.
My most enjoyable moment in any car game was FO1, dirt track, force feedback wheel and pedals, way too high speed, surrounded by cars and with a steep curve coming up.
The tension and force of it all is just immense.

Hoping NCG will capture that same raw feeling of fun.

Xbox pad, and I'm fairly sure that's the most popular choice. Either because people already have one or because it's rather cheap and good.

My G25 has been collecting dust lately, so I hope Bugbear will put emphasis on good, responsive wheel controls for NCG. Flatout UC was pretty fun with wheel too, but it was definitely easier to play with keyboard or gamepad.

Either way, the gamepad support must be wider than just Xinput devices. Microsoft pulled a real dick move on us who own PS3 compatible pads or generic usb pads, rendering them pretty much useless for many games and for some incomprehensible reason even indie devs went along with it.

I'll definitely be putting my wheel (Fanatec CSR) and pedals (Logitech G25) into action... really looking forward to it and hoping that there is a decent Force Feedback implementation to reflect the physics engine

I've got an Xbox 360 controller and a Logitech G27 racing wheel, though I can't use the pedals on it as there isn't enough space under my desk for me to get adequate leg-room (boo!)

Gamepad, because it's PC game. If it came to consoles I would play it with wheel because I have my wheel setup at my TV, and it takes too much effort for me to bring the wheel to PC.

I use a "Logitech WingMan Gamepad Extreme". It works with Midtown Madness 1, Grid 2 and FlatOut 2 (but unfortunately not with FO: UC)

Since it is going to be quite arcade game, I voted for gamepad. My opinion is: definitely not wheel! I tried Flatout 1 once with my Driving Force GT and didnt like it at all. Wheels belong to simulators, gamepads to arcade. ;)

But still I think you should make a wheel support for the game.  :)

Been playing with a Keyboard since I started playing FO1. (Which is influenced by the fact I've never actually owned a wheel and still don't really plan to get one.)

I'll probably be using an Xbox One controller; that'll probably/hopefully be out for PC as well by the time NCG launches.

Wheel controls have just never made sense to me, considering the arcade nature of the Flatout games, but hey, if NCG gets Oculus Rift support I'll dust off my G25 for sure.
Title: Re: POLL: Gamepad, keyboard or a wheel?

As much as I loved playing Flatout 2 with a wheel on LAN with my friends when we had a school computer lab all to ourselves... I don't have a wheel anymore. I'll be playing with a keyboard, and a wheel is currently pretty low on my to-buy-if-I-have-money-to-spend list.

I don't really understand the point of this poll, though. You're going to support all three anyway, unless you're jerks which I know you're not. From my experience (I've had a bit, not a ton) fine-tuning controls is not that time-consuming. I don't see what difference it would make to development.

They look like they're going to be more comfortable to use than a 360 controller, and also the wired 360 thumbsticks are bad, my thumb keeps slipping off of them.

I voted gamepad, Logitech rumble 2 to be precise.

Wheels need to be supported from start even though I dont own one.

One of the things that really annoys me in some games is that if you dont use a 360 pad, you cant rebind keys without using  third party software (ie "joy2key" or similar)

Even as a joypad only user, I would prefer to see game come later with wheel support, as no point in winding up some elements of the community from day 1.

Thanks for the wheel support Cornkid. I have not purchased the new Ridge Runner game or other driving games because of nonsupport in the games. I tried the demo with a 360 controller but I only can use them on other games. I just can't drive with a controller or keyboard.  :'(

I read that it was too much trouble or impossible to add the wheel support to Ridge Runner because of an analog vs. digital input conflict. I just wonder why some newer games will or will not support wheels? The game engine, different game consoles, direct x, GFW requirements?

Does anyone have a simple to understand answer, so that I won't be upset that the other driving  games don't support a wheel and I want to play it anyway because I like it?   :-\

I use Logitech Momo Racing FF wheel to play car games. I hope NGC includes proper support for wheels because those are meant to be used with car games :) Also wheel is the easiest controller for younger kids than gamepad or keyboard.

I also own an Xbox controller but I prefer to use wheel if the game has proper support for it.

Yes. Money. The only reason we don't support every controller out there is that they require custom handling in the code and frontend per-device and we don't have the guys/time (=money) to do it. We're trying our best to make sure that all the devices that make sense with NCG are going to be supported.

An exception is our previous game (Ridge Racer Unbounded/Drfitopia), where we did try the game with a wheel and it just didn't work, gameplay-wise, so we left them out consciously. If we had added wheel support, that would've meant leaving something else out.

That's actually the answer to pretty much all feature requests. We don't leave things undone out of not caring, it's because we can't. We need to ship a game with the features we can afford that make sense.

Definitely a wheel, it's a car game after all.

The most fun I've had so far with my Logitech G25 so far has been while playing Flatout 2 with the full 900 degree steering lock. Using the clutch pedal as a nitro pedal and the gear stick as a handbrake. I wasn't always the top performing driver at our LAN games, but arguably I was having the best time while playing.

If it's altogether possibly I'd like to see NGC support the H-pattern gearsticks of G25/27 and other wheels. It would make destruction derby even more frantic, if after a crash you could miss a gear shift, stall your engine and be left helpless on the arena.

PS. I pre-ordered instantly after hearing about this.

I voted for keyboard because it's a little complicated to mount my Logitech DF GT in front of my PC (compared to PS3) but I might try to play with wheel too. Actually I'm thinking of buying more expensive one before Gran Turismo 6 release.

So a keyboard is more priority.

To me: this game will be arcadey enough for just a (XBOX360) controller. Although there should be a challenge in controlling the cars driving behaviour. But the best would of course be if all people could play it to their particular taste.

Hi m8, been ages, I hope youre well.

Joonas has given an answer above, and it makes sense, the time/money spent on enabling keyboard/pad/wheel will impact on other things.

I personally say do away with some other things then, but to give the game its best chance of being popular and active then the maximum amount of players should be encouraged from day 1, other bits can be tweaked/added with patches if needs be.

Get the basics in place, then add the eye candy or gimmicks , if its anything like Flatout then modders may even do their stuff and tweak the game for you.

First impressions for any game are the ones that count, as these are often the reviews that gamers read and decide whether to buy or not, then it depends how a game is supported by devs.

Pretty straightforward answer to me, I don't have any gamepad/wheel and I don't plan on buying since I know I wouldn't use them anyways, so I hope some effort will be put to make the game work well with keyboards :).

Had no trouble using a MOMO wheel with Flatout 1 and now use a DFGT wheel when I host our FOv3 mod for Flatout 1.

Youtube video link - use 720p quality setting.
Online with the FOv3 mod for Flatout 1. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9DQOrH8Y7w)

Got my first force feedback MOMO wheel when I ordered US version of Flatout 1 back in Aug, 2005. I have gone through 3 MOMO wheels and now have a DFGT wheel. Grid 1 derby racing online wore out my last MOMO wheel ( strip the gears!! ).

My racing games got to support a wheel or it a no buy for me. Be it arcade or sim.

First, let me say that I'm so happy that you are making this game. I've always been a huuuge fan of Flatout 1 & 2. There were so many lans I played those games with my friends.

So I have to say that anyone who played Flatout with a force feedback racing wheel can never go back. It was so exciting to feel the changes in the track and the other cars pushing. A fun that I never got back in other car games.

I know that the money is a problem but pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, just make it that some driving wheels are usable. Not all, take the 3 most common... one in every price range for example... anything.

Hell, I would buy a new FFB racing wheel if your game is as fun to play as Flatout 1 or 2  :D

I'd play with a wireless 360 pad.

Also, by the time the game releases, it'd be sweet if the game supported the xbone pad, since it has rumble in the triggers, and i've read that one of the best uses of that feature is for car games.

Yes, of course. We will support keyboards, game controllers and wheels.

We are mainly interested to see if there's a strong preference for one control method in the community. That may then have some effect on game design, or not.

This poll is surprising me. Surprise to see more players would use a gamepad than a wheel with a PC racing game, or is that console players voting, too.

Also surprise to see that many KB players still around. I knew some KB players online with Flatout 1 that were tough to beat!

The amount of games that can make use of a controller is FAR larger than the amount of games that can make use of a wheel. Therefore there are FAR more players with controllers that don't want to spend money on a wheel.
Title: Re: POLL: Gamepad, keyboard or a wheel?

Wheel is more expensive, takes more space and can't be attached to anywhere (for example my computer table shape doesn't allow me to attach my wheel on it), plus many don't want to use wheel unless the game is pure simulation.

That's why gamepad is popular choice on PC racing games too. I play every racing game with PS3 controller on PC.

Many console players have a wheel I believe.

I tried a wheel for a couple of games, but spent more time calibrating it than steering with it, lol.

For me the way to judge a good car game is using my gamepad, and leaning that much whilst cornering that I damn near fall out of my chair ;)

This poll is surprising me. Surprise to see more players would use a gamepad than a wheel with a PC racing game, or is that console players voting, too.

Also surprise to see that many KB players still around. I knew some KB players online with Flatout 1 that were tough to beat!
Well many has a gamepad for PC if they have wired Xbox 360 controller and it's also way more cheaper and this is still an arcade game so it doesn't surprise me :)

Dunno if it's on my side but handling in FO1 was made for controller or keyboard. You don't get any precise with wheel because there's huge delay and some deadzone no matter how much I change settings at least with my wheel so I'm way more better with keyboard. Analog controls doesn't seem to have any advantage because of this.
I expect this to be very different in NCG because now this is PC only at first.

I would've voted for wheel and Controller because I tend to go back and forth with those two depending on how I feel at the time.

Keyboard... I don't know how people can manage with that. 360 controllers aren't that much now!

No matter what everyone says, I'm still hoping that Bugbear optimizes this game for keyboards.

I kinda keep losing my peripherals :P

I've been playing car games with keyboard over 20 years with this setup:

A  Throttle
Z  Break / Reverse
,  left
.  right
space handbreak

and that's much pretty much about it.

I think I will however invest for some proper wheel and pedals for NCG.

I'll be playing with keyboard, if only because i don't have a gamepad and don't see much of a reason to buy one right now. Keyboard works well enough for me.

Because this game is not a race simulator I choose gamepad (Logitech F710).

Go a G25+seat setup but for a game like this defo gamepad... no merrit in wheel unless it is full sim like iracing and such ;)

It a racing game, why wouldn't you want to use a wheel? Where the fun in using a pad. My grand nieces and nephews want to use my wheel in Flatout 2!  I do the gas and brake if their feet can't reach the pedals. :)

I spent $1200 on a gaming computer to have good eye candy. So I will spend $125 for a DFGT wheel.

I could tell you what I spent on a gaming rig, but bottom line is who cares, I like to lean in my seat whilst cornering, cant do that on a wheel.

Although there should be adequate support on account of it being the standard input device on PC, keyboard controls are generally bad for racing games, where analog control is preferable. A wheel would be optimal, but on top of having a really specific use area, they tend to cost a bunch. A gamepad works well for most things, and I'll be playing this game with a 360 controller.

I think you can catch me leaning sometimes too when car not wanting to turn and there times when I'm Flatout and Grid derby racing, I about rip the wheel of the small table it clamp to!! I have to keep checking now and then to see if clamps are still tight.

I stand corrected then, I'd just presumed that because of wheel being fixed it wouldnt be possible to lean.

I did try a wheel once, and it was a laugh, but I was messing with settings too much to find the sweet spot.

Personally i would only use a wheel for precision racing. Or i would have to wack all my settings off cuase it would be nearly impossible to actually pull off all the slides from left to right in quick sucsession without a low turning angle (wich turn the wheel to a gimmick in my book if i use one i want it to feel real)

No need to go on the defensive btw only said my mind what i think about it. Also i said merrit as in actually be quicker did not talk about fun.... geus it could be more fun if you can stand knowing you can drive quicker on a pad,i cant i got a i wanna be in front complex :p

That what I took issue with, when you said there "no merrit in wheel unless it is full sim".

For me using a pad in a racing game is no fun. Fun is using a force feedback wheel. GRID 1 was a good game for FF and you damage your car, you felt it. I'm not into serious sim racing.

I do not begrudge any player using a pad if that their choice. But last few years I have seem many posts in different forums that say PC arcade racing games do not need to support a wheel, a pad is plenty. Blur did not support a wheel, FUEL had issues working with a wheel, was shock to learn even Bugbear Ridge Racer Unbounded did not support a wheel.  >:(

It use to be PC games is where you went to go to use a wheel, even before there was force feedback wheels, consoles were mainly pads. These days, I have to make sure my next PC racing game actually will support a wheel before I buy it.

Here post by Bugbear earlier in this thread:

Can you please confirm that all 3 control options will be supported? The very existence of this poll worries me...

Yes, of course. We will support keyboards, game controllers and wheels.

We are mainly interested to see if there's a strong preference for one control method in the community. That may then have some effect on game design, or not.

So you should be safe to pre-order, there will be wheel support in the NCG. :)

Primary is gamepad and kb comes second.

In the end, it's an arcade game so it doesn't benefit from wheel.

I hope that driving model is at least a bit realistic... somewhere between rally trophy and fo2.

I have a pc game pad, wheel and keyboard.  In the end as long as the game has the ability to bind keys and refined control any of the 3 would work.  In other games in the past I usually end up using the default keyboard due to lack of said refined control and the option to bind keys.  Which is a finger pressing saver over the many hours of game play.   Which ever you decide to implement just make sure its done well enough to make the game that much more enjoyable.   ;)

Why do many votes for gamepad?
Because gamepads are not expensive, they don't require lots of space like wheel and they give more precise control to racing games with analog stick than tapping arrowkeys on keyboard.

I drive a lot better with a wheel and pedals than with a pad or KB.  ;)

After I played the Flatout 1 demo, I pre-order Flatout 1 and my first force feedback wheel, a Logitech MOMO. I got the Flatout game first, it took another week before MOMO wheel got delivered. So the first week playing Flatout 1, I use KB to do Bronze level. Was glad to upgrade to a wheel to do Silver and Gold levels in FO1.  :)

I don't see how people can say that, "steering wheel for this kind of games is not very adequate". I can see if a wheel is out of your budget, but it a racing game, why would not players want to use a wheel?

Racing wheel is not just for sims!!!! For me, no wheel support, no buy, be it arcade racing game or sim or somewhere in between ( GRID 1 ).

Players are welcome to use what every controller that make them happy, be it KB, pad or wheel. It a shame when PC racing game come to the PC and there no built in wheel support like what happen with Blur and Ridge Racer Unbounded. :(

Not really, in very arcady racing game with no phisics wheel will only hinder the race. For instance I once tried NFS underground and the wheel was really getting in the way, I'd say even keyboard is more responsive for that.

Ya there racing games where pad player can have an advantage over wheel player or vice versus. Take GRID 1, pad player had easier time doing drifts. In GRID 1 derby racing thou I think I had an advantage in a rough and tumble race where players are trying to pit you. With a wheel in my hands I can counter steer to fight off a hit to my rear quarter panel and if my car does start to come around, I just go with it and do a 360 and keep going. I could not do that with a pad, but maybe a good pad player can counter steer fast enough.

This is why GRID 1 derby racing is GREAT and will be miss in GRID 2! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYkkawc606Q)

I sure hope Bugbear give us a good GRID 1 derby style figure 8 type track or 2 in NCG. We need a new home since Codemasters left us out in the cold with GRID 2.

Already tried using wheel and gamepad, but never got as much fun as when I play on keyboard(looks quite ridiculously, but I've played racing games on keyboard for ~12 years, and I prefer wheel only if a game has very seriously screwed keyboard controls(instant extreme wheel movement etc.), or it's a simulation which really needs using it.

So keyboard, +wheel when bored.

FO series always had good Keyboard support - NCG seems to have good support too.

I have Logitech Momo steering wheel, Xbox360 and Ps4 controller.

The way the game is heading currently I would use my Steering Wheel - but I will possibly use the Xbox controller when if I don't feel like setting up the Steering Wheel.

Currently can only use the Keyboard in NCG - all other input devices don't work at present.

I would like all controller types to be used. Wheel, joystick, gamepad, everything. Just like the other flatout games. I can't use a gamepad due to physical limitations so I hate games that only support the Xbox 360 pad. This game is being developed for the PC first and I game on a PC because it gives me choices. Please don't limit my choice of controller like a console. It's a trend that has become too commonplace.

I am using a wheel (G25) which feels great, even if the steering ratio without Profiler is wrong. The 900° ratation makes the cars very unresponsive, so I used the Profiler to set it to 370°. Gamepad is fine, too.

i can play keyboard and pad, i play Racegames Last years with 360 pad and would prefer full support for this and logitech etc. gamepads which are based on PS-controller

... sure for wheelplayers it would only be fair to give them their wheels, woulnd't be fair to let me as Padpro drive against an Wheeler ( with low pad-experience btw.), whos forced to used a pad....

I know voting's closed but I'd want to use my wheel if I can (can't currently on early access even though the game seems to detect it).

By experiencing driving games with a decent wheel I've ruined the pad experience, doesn't even come close.

Also, not to sound snotty or anything but I don't see how anyone could even attempt to play a modern driving game with a keyboard lol. Unless you are using a mouse to steer or something.

I think it really depends on the game.

For example a game like iRacing... You would steer with your mouse. So using a wheel would make the exp 10 times better. This is an arcade sim, I am sure using a controller would be alright. There is a huge difference between a Racing sim and an Arcade racing sim. I agree you cant use a keyboard or Gamepad on a game like Assetto Corsa or iRacing.

You could if it would be supported well. I played GT Legends with gamepad for years and was as fast as most people with wheels. But I never´ve understood people using keyboard. I mean, the first thing I would do is at least buy a cheap gamepad (even with analog sticks). Keyboard has nothing but digital input and kills immersion IMO.

IMO that depends on the support. XBOX360-gamepad is pretty precise and a good support allows full and sensitive control in the game. I have a G25 which I also use for NCG, but mostly for simulations. I even find wheels annyoing sometimes since I need to mount it and demount it a lot on my desk depending on which game I play, otherwise it´s laying around. For these kind of game a gamepad should be pretty fine if a wheel isn´t an option.

Eh, the pad works fine for the derby, but it just doesn't feel quite as precise on the races... Maybe I'm just bad with the pad though xD

I am not playing with gamepad in NCG. But as you can even play Forza and Gran Turismo with gamepad pretty precisely, there shouldn´t be any problem to include it in NCG. It worked fin in Flatout 1 and 2 on Playstation already. I guess, it´s just not fully implemented yet.

Poll is closed now, but i want to support keyboard anyway =)

WASD forever =)

I have spent hundreds of hours with flatout 2 and keyboard.
the only arcade-racing-game, that has a little more interesting WASD handling than flatout2 is dirt2 (it's just IMHO =)).

Just want to make sure, that NCG will not forget about keyboard fans =)

As a hardcore simracer i'd say wheel, and give the physics on the cars a little extra attention. Or why not devide the gamemodes in to arcade handling and realistic handling? both modes playable by keyboarders, gampadders and wheel-dudes!

The cars that are in now are way to easy to handle, and doesnt flip as easily as compared to the first flatout.

I'd say this game really needs an realistic tough to it to REALLY win my heart, all tho im already in love lol.

Hows that for a first post?  8)

I am sorry I missed the poll. I would have voted "whel" but iin reality I believe that in 2014 a driving game has to support multiple controllers, have decent FFB and passable precision for all users.

In my case, if wheel support is absent or poor, I will simply not play the game. It's not  a matter of snobbism, but I simply cannot drive a car with a keyboard and if I have a choice between a great game with a gamepad and a mediocre one with a wheel and pedals, I'll take the mediocre one. At least until Toyota or Ford come up with a car with a gamepad instead of a wheel.

Playing on 360 pad, have a couple of friends that play either 360 pad or G27.

Wow I did not expect that would be so close ! There are a lot of kb players ! Respect guys, totally not easy to play this game with a keyboard.

It's sad there is not a ton of votes in these polls, I'm sure there are more than hundreds of players on the free tech or even the early alpha, people should let the devs hear their voices !

Poll is closed, but I still want to say that I am a keyboard driver, and always will be!  I have a gamepad which I could use, but I prefer the tap-a-tap feathering of a key over the stick.  With a really high quality keyboard there is no keypress limit, and the control can be fine tuned to an amazing degree.

One advantage is that you never have the travel time of a gamepad's stick.  It is a minimal amount of time, but I'd be willing to say the transfer from left to right on a stick is longer than one report interval, where on a keyboard there can be literally no delay.

The disadvantage that I come across occasionally is wheel lock upon brakeing, as even a super quick tap of the brakes will be at full power which leads to an unwanted slide.  This is rare, though.  This is not exclusive to this game, and it actually feels better in NCG than most other games.

There were quite a few players who preferred the keyboard in FlatOut. For steering wheel users the dynamics have changed, Newer games now have to use a new form of input to work with Microsoft Direct X format.

The keyboard should not be affected by this and I hope that it all works out for everyone.

Gotta go with a wheel. I play all other racing games that way. Grid, Dirt, F1, Driver SF. I hope to see better wheel adjustments soon. Hard to play with one now (at least my Thrustmaster Skuderia F430 cockpit wheel..) as it turns nearly 50% before the wheels turn at all...with deadzone at 0, saturation at 0 and sensitivity topped out (Not much difference in any setting, it could be they don't actually do much at this point though...)

I use 243 degree rotation with my DFGT wheel and these settings:

I don't have any deadzone turning left or right. Agree the saturation and sensitivity don't seem to have much effect. I tried both settings at 0% and 100% and did not see a major difference between 0% and 100%. I also would like to see Bugbear use a number between 0-100 with the sliders for fine tuning the settings like we did in GRID 1.

If u spend money on a G25 or G27 if u like realistic games u ll use the device alot! so the price is low compared with the hours of use. Turning isn't quite as smooth - its a touch more jagged if you're tapping the keys.  My movement certainly wasn't as smooth - though its possible what I've seen might have been the product of lag, and not input.

ah yeah that could be.
some differences are highly recognizable with different controls. like moving cursor with mouse vs pad where mouse is usually smooth while pad is more edgy.
if you look at the steering wheel you see the difference for sure but i didn't think it's visible in the driving line.

You need a wheel for best control.
Bugbear work hard for the physics.
You can't feel the physics with keyboard or gamepad.

This is exacly what I have: (Playseat Alcantara + Logitech G27)

I run a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel with 540Deg. rotation, force feedback set to 120%. Feels 95% there as it is. I don't really have a lot of time to mess about with it to be honest, just like to jump in and drive. :-\

Gamepad, but, I only use the D-pad for steering, not touching the analog sticks. :)

Mostly XBOX 360 controller, Logitech G27 when I'm sure I have more time. I know I know... I should always use the G27...
