Because a publisher is taking a big risk when spending millions of dollars on a game without knowing if they'll ever see that amount back in sales. So they'll often use the rights to the franchise as collateral. It makes sense from a publishers point of view, but I would love to see publishers also returning the rights when the game IS successful.
